Water Separability of Petroleum Oils Tester DWS-221
Apparatus for water separability of petroleum oils and synthetic fluid conforms to the ASTM D1401 Standard Test Method for Water Separability of Petroleum Oils and Synthetic Fluids. This apparatus provides a guide for determining the water separation characteristics of oils subject to water contamination and turbulence. It is used for specification of new oils and monitoring of in-service oils. And it covers measurement of the ability of petroleum oils or synthetic fluids to separate from water. Although developed specifically for steam-turbine oils having viscosities of 28.8–90 mm2/s at 40°C, this test method may be used to test oils of other types having various viscosities and synthetic fluids at other test temperatures. It is recommended, however, that the test temperature be raised to 82 ± 1°C when testing products more viscous than 90 mm2/s at 40°C.

Precise Evaluation of Oil-Water Separation with the Water Separability of Petroleum Oils Tester DWS-221
Ensure optimal performance of industrial lubricants and hydraulic fluids with the Water Separability of Petroleum Oils Tester DWS-221—a precision-engineered instrument designed to assess how effectively petroleum-based oils separate from water, in full compliance with ASTM D1401, ISO 6614, and IP 360 standards. Critical for power generation, marine, and heavy-industry applications, the DWS-221 quantifies emulsion formation and separation time—key indicators of lubricant reliability in wet environments.
Engineered for Standardized, Repeatable Testing
The DWS-221 Water Separability Tester precisely blends 40 mL of test oil with 40 mL of distilled water in a calibrated graduated cylinder, then agitates the mixture at 1500 ± 15 rpm for 5 minutes using a motorized stirrer. The unit maintains the sample at a controlled test temperature—typically 54°C or 82°C—as specified by method requirements. After agitation, the mixture is allowed to settle, and the volumes of oil, water, and emulsion are recorded at defined intervals (e.g., 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes) to evaluate separation efficiency.
- Compliant with ASTM D1401 & ISO 6614 – Validated for turbine oils, hydraulic fluids, and other industrial lubricants.
- Precision Temperature Control (±0.1°C) – Integrated thermostatic water bath ensures stable test conditions.
- Motorized Stirrer with Speed Verification – Maintains exact 1500 rpm for consistent shear and reproducibility.
- Dual or Quad Test Positions – Run multiple samples simultaneously for higher lab throughput.
- Clear Graduated Cylinders with LED Backlight – Enables accurate visual reading of phase separation layers.
- Programmable Timer & Data Logging – Built-in stopwatch with alarm; optional digital recording for compliance reports.
Trusted for Lubricant Quality and Machinery Protection
Poor water separability leads to stable emulsions that accelerate corrosion, reduce lubricity, promote foaming, and impair heat transfer. The DWS-221 allows lubricant formulators and maintenance teams to verify new oil quality or monitor in-service degradation—ensuring compliance with OEM specifications (e.g., GE, Siemens, ISO L-TSA, Denison HF-0).
Whether qualifying turbine oil for a combined-cycle power plant or troubleshooting a hydraulic system in a steel mill, the Water Separability of Petroleum Oils Tester DWS-221 delivers reliable, standards-compliant insights into one of the most critical performance properties of industrial lubricants.
Separate with certainty. Protect your equipment. Extend fluid life.
